A transparent island is a subnetwork or portion of an optical network, in which any node can directly establish a transparent lightpath to any other node. In other word, the distance between any node pair in the transparent island is always within the maximum transparent limit of an optical transmission system. For an optical network with multiple transparent islands, one important issue to investigate is how to efficiently and economically divide a large-scaled optical network into several non-overlapping transparent islands. Based on the division, the second important issue is how to establish a lightpath that traverses multiple transparent islands.
